The use of compresses or bags is a highly effective, non-invasive method for treating some types of orthopedic pain. Besides being inexpensive, application is quite simple and can be performed by anyone! But first, we need to know what to use and the appropriate temperature for application. Basically, the compress can be hot or cold..

Hot or Warm Compresses

Hot or warm compresses or bags are used to treat muscle pain. The most common examples of muscle pain are stiff necks and pain in the scapular or lower back. Heat causes an increase in blood vessel size and relaxation of the muscles in the area where it is applied. This improves non-traumatic muscle pain, such as those mentioned above. Care must be taken with the temperature applied to avoid skin burns. Hot compresses should be applied to the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes, approximately four times a day, at a comfortable temperature.

Cold compresses

Cold compresses or ice packs are used to treat acute traumatic events, such as blows, sprains, bruises, fractures, and others. Unlike heat, this method reduces the diameter of the blood vessels, decreasing blood flow to the area. This improves inflammation and pain. If ice is applied, be careful not to place it directly on the skin to avoid burns. One recommendation is to place the ice in a plastic bag and wrap it in a towel before applying it to the skin. The suggested application time ranges from 15 to 20 minutes and should be performed at least four times a day, preferably in the first few days after the trauma.

If you experience pain, whether or not related to any type of trauma, consult a doctor. Only after a careful evaluation can the best treatment be prescribed!
